To Forgive Is to Set a Prisoner Free and Discover That the Prisoner Was You – Lewis B. Smedes

Holding on to feelings of resentment and anger toward others or yourself will only serve to stifle your future growth.  Learning how to forgive is an essential skill for personal growth and development.  Don’t listen to those who would have you believe that forgiveness is an action practiced by the weak.  Forgiveness is a powerful ally and it holds the ability to set your mind, body, and soul free from the enemies of your past that look to hold you hostage.  Without forgiveness, the resentment toward others or the guilt of personal shortcomings will slowly drain the joy from your life.

Decide today to forgive yourself for the mistakes you have made up to this point in your life.  Decide today to forgive others who have hurt, lied, or mistreated you.  Decide to forgive, but don’t forget.  To forgive, only to continue to make the same mistakes or be hurt by the same people and situations is a patch worn by the naïve.  Learn from your past and then release its weight from around your neck.

Remember that forgiveness is for you and you alone.  It’s a gift given to your present and future self.  Freedom from the pains, anger, and guilt of the past will strengthen your spirit.  It will forge a new path forward toward personal peace and allow you to start operating from a place of power in your life once again.
