You Don’t Learn to Walk by Following Rules. You Learn by Doing, and by Falling Over – Sir Richard Branson

When we’re young we have to test everything to figure out how things are done and how things work. We have to try and try until we get it right, and often we fall over time and time again, to eventually succeed in our pursuit.

It’s the same in adult life. In order for us to do something, we have to test it out and see what works before we can get it right. We have to take a few wobbly steps, fall over, get back up and try again. We learn by doing, and we learn from the mistakes we make along the way.

There are no rules to life. There’s not one certain way of doing this. We all do it differently, but we all have to test our wings and feet. So keep trying, keep learning, keep failing, and keep succeeding. Live your life like a child, and don’t be afraid of getting things wrong or right – just do it because you have to and because you’re curious to see what happens if you do something a certain way.

Allow yourself to take a few wobbly steps to see if it works. The worst thing that can happen is that you fall on your bum. But then you can just get back up again and try something different.

  1. Thanks for putting together such good inspiring words 😊

  2. I definitely agree with this. I think people are afraid of the fall, but there is no reason to fear failure. We get up and try again.

  3. Agreed! Forget who said this but better to try something and fail than attempt nothing and succeed.

    • That’s so true, Mark! Failing at something usually leads to succeeding at something else – which is of course a lot better than not attempting anything in the first place!
