Excellence Does Not Require Perfection – Henry James

Perfection is a concept that we all fantasize about attaining. However, as many of us know, it is not possible to achieve. Success, on the other hand, is something that can be in all of our futures.

The opposite of perfection is not failure. We don’t have to be free of flaws, making mistakes, and having regrets in order to accomplish excellence. There are so many great things that we make happen each day – we just have to realize it and use these moments as fuel to drive ourselves forward.

Bad days and hardships are inevitable. Obstacles and roadblocks are bound to try to throw us off the path to greatness. The key is to stand up to these obstacles; to show them that we are stronger, wiser, and more resilient than we are given credit for. Perfection is not attainable, but excellence is!

  1. My constant struggle. I hate the quote that says “if you aim for perfection, you will achieve greatness.” I like this notion much better.

  2. This is what I teach my clients! Perfection is not what you should strive for, only to try, fall, learn, get back up, and repeat! Great article!

    • Thank you and I totally agree! I think in many ways, trying to be perfect only causes one to feel like a failure when they don’t accomplish that goal – a goal that literally is, impossible. However, it is possible to try and it’s also possible to be successful!

  3. For many years I’ve constantly beat up on myself for not being successful enough. I compare myself to others always felt that I should have more. Still feeling this way. Working on getting better.

    • I wish you all the best! I understand how hard it is not to compare ourselves to others. Just remember that the best you can do is try your hardest and everything will fall into line! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

  4. …”We cannot attain perfection but in it’s pursuits we can achieve excellence.” This post reminded me of that quote. Good Work.
