You Must Do the Things You Think You Cannot Do – Eleanor Roosevelt

Our thoughts shape our behaviors, and our behaviors shape our destiny. Negative thinking affects our reality, our life, and our level of success, limiting our potential. When we are afraid of something, the first thing we impulsively do is start thinking thoughts such as “I can’t deal with that,” “I’m not ready to deal with that,” “I’m not good enough to face this,” – the first step we should take is to face the obstacle immediately, improvising something and behaving as if we actually can at least try it.

Actually, doing what we think we cannot do, is the key to real growth. Doing more than we are supposed to do is the key to improvement. Normally people think that progress means living the life they are supposed to live, going from being a child to being a teenager, from being an adult to retiring, and the majority of people on this earth live this way. People don’t even ask themselves if they can do more, if they can live a better life, if they can be happier.

Real growth isn’t about being ordinary, it’s not about being as others want us to be.  Real growth is unleashing our potential and going beyond our limits. It’s thinking outside the box, looking at ourselves from unusual perspectives.

The only way to unleash our potential is to stop thinking, and take action; it’s the first step, apparently the simplest one, but also the hardest one. But it’s worth a try: once we take that step, we surprise ourselves with how far we can go, and how much we can achieve, despite all the people who told us that we couldn’t, because it was just “impossible.”

  16. I like the Eleanor Roosevelt quote. I recently saw a film about a female Soviet sniper in WW2 and Mrs Roosevelt was so impressed with this woman that they became friends.

“…it’s the first step, apparently the simplest one, but also the hardest one.” So true! For me the fear roars loudest just at the start. Everything seems to settle more as I try to move through to completion. Thank-you for this encouragement.
