Many of us feel the understandable need to fit in. In fact, throughout most of our lives, we find ourselves searching for who we are and how we relate to the world around us. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make friends and ‘fit in’ – we should understand that it is our unique qualities that make us who we are. As long as we are doing what is right, we shouldn’t be concerned with the opinions of others.
Let me ask you something. When you wake up, are you proud to be who you are? Are you proud of how you treat others? Of how you treat yourself? If you’re not happy with your life, why is that? Is it because you’re not meeting the standards that others have set for you or is it because you’re not meeting your own expectations?
We need to remember that it’s important to be proud of ourselves. It’s important for us to be able to look in the mirror and be happy with who’s staring back. No matter how many people compliment you, if you’re not satisfied with who you’ve become, all the flattery in the world won’t matter.
There will always be negativity in this world. While a sad fact of life, it’s a fact that we all have to face. However, we can decide not to take the negativity of others to heart. We can decide to focus on the good things people have to say about us instead of the bad. We can look at criticism as a possible way to better ourselves, instead of using it as a method to destroy our self-worth.
Remember to work hard and be proud of your accomplishments, but don’t rely on others to pat you on the back. Reward yourself by going somewhere or doing something that you enjoy. Every single step that you take towards bettering yourself is one that you should be proud of. Don’t allow the cruelty of others to weigh you down and fill you with self-doubt. Rise above their criticisms and be happy to be who you are!
