“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.” – Paulo Coelho
I dare say that we are all afraid of suffering in one way or another – be it through pain, embarrassment, failure, or loss. But I dare to also say that we have come to a point where we fear suffering on a much deeper level than we need to or should.
This fear of suffering is keeping us from doing the things we want, and living the lives that we dream of. This fear of suffering has gone so far that we’d rather stay away from something that could turn out to be the most amazing thing that has ever happened to us – just in case it might hurt us.
This is not a healthy way of thinking. It isn’t healthy to keep away from living just because it might cause us pain and suffering – because there’s absolutely no way to avoid it anyway.
Throughout life, there will be pain and there will be suffering. And yes, many times it will be caused by something that you’ve attempted to do that failed or didn’t turn out the way you wanted. Other times it might be caused by loss or grief. No matter what, our suffering is inevitable because it is part of what life is.
So don’t keep yourself from living because of your fear of suffering. Suffering is not always bad – it can teach us many things about the world and about ourselves. Therefore, it’s not the suffering itself that you should fear, but your fear of suffering. That is what is truly keeping you from living the life you wish.
Remember that just as there is suffering in the world, there is also overcoming.
