You Have to Decide What Your Highest Priorities Are and Have the Courage to Say ‘No’ to Other Things. And the Way to Do That Is by Having a Bigger ‘Yes’ Burning Inside – Stephen Covey

So often, what we get out of life, depends on what we say “yes” and “no” to. It comes down to what we prioritize and what we feel is more important to us, and if we have the courage to live fully by this.

This is sometimes hard to know, though – and even harder to choose. How does one know what to prioritize, what choices to make? And when do you leave it up to chance or fate?

In these instances, it is easy to live in the moment (even though at other times, it is the hardest thing to do) where we will always choose what we want to do right now rather than doing something that will benefit us in the long run.

We might go out for a drink with our friends rather than finish off an important assignment that needs to be done. We might rather choose to ignore hard feelings we carry inside because it’s easier for the moment, even though we need to deal with them in order for us to move on with life.

We will know what to prioritize, though, if we ask ourselves – and answer truthfully – what “yes” burns brighter within. This might be one time we need to look ahead, to understand what feels more important to us in the long run.

Is it more important for you to have fun for an extra night or is it more important for you to secure a degree or a job to make your future better? And is it more important for you to be a pretend kind of happy and healthy right now, or in the long run in the future?

Be honest with yourself and trust your gut. What “yes” burns brighter within? The true answer you get is what you need to trust and follow.

  1. Great reminder… thank you! 🤗

  2. So true. Our choices do shape our lives.

  3. Well said. Stephen Covey had a big impact on my life and I am thankful to the boss who sent me to a 7 Habits course (I went kicking and screaming and left a changed person). Today, we are too often encouraged to “trust the numbers” when it was our gut with the answer all along.

  4. I used to basically say ‘Yes’ to anything that might
    a) bring me money
    b) be some kind of career stepping stone.
This wasn’t the way to make me happy. I’m much pickier now and it’s truly better. However, I think you can have more than one priority at a time.

  5. True. Prioritization most important.

  6. great reminder thank you 🙂 x
